Marilyn R. Garcia is a poet, author, scientist, educator, and homeschooling veteran. Her career began as a middle and high school classroom science teacher. From there, she managed a research laboratory at Johns Hopkins Oncology Center while pursuing graduate work in environmental science. She has worked as a field biologist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and ICF Kaiser Engineers, Inc. She taught for many years in the biology department of Harford Community College in Bel Air, MD and, later, founded her own environmental consulting business. Through all of that, she managed to homeschool her two daughters over a period eleven years.
Marilyn’s publication career began with a four-line poem about her cat, published in her hometown newspaper when she was in fourth grade. Now she writes fiction and non-fiction books for young readers as well as poetry for all ages. Her work has appeared in several poetry anthologies for children including Hop To It: Poems to Get You Moving, by Pomelo Books, a 2021 Kids’ Choice Award Winner., Things We Do, Pomelo Books 2021, and 10.10 Poetry Anthology: Celebrating 10 in 10 Different Ways, WeeWordsForWeeOnes, 2021.
Marilyn has a B.S. in Secondary Science Education from the University of Maryland, College Park (go Terps!) and an M.S. in Environmental Studies from Johns Hopkins University. She lives in Howard County Maryland, surrounded by a yard full of flowers, with her family and many cats. She is on the advisory board for A-OK Mentoring – Tutoring, Inc. where she also volunteers as a reading mentor.
